20 years online. Not a single enquiry.
The situation
A professional genealogist had maintained his own website for over 20 years. When I asked how many clients had ever come through it, his answer was none. Not one enquiry in two decades.
The first problem was hiding in the domain itself: a .uk.com address. It looks like a UK domain but it isn't. It's effectively a subdomain of .com, and Google doesn't treat it as a local UK domain. The site had been invisible to UK search from the start.
What changed
We moved to a .co.uk domain, rebuilt the site to be fast and clean, and I wrote all the copy from scratch, structured around what someone actually searches for when they need a genealogist, not around what he wanted to say about himself.
